Malta work permit - the single-permit guide

Malta uses a single-permit system that combines a work permit and residence permit in one document. Here's how it works, who can sponsor you, and how the Skills Pass fits in.

What is the Malta single permit?

The single permit is the document that allows a third-country national to live and work in Malta for a specific employer. It is issued by Identità under EU Directive 2011/98.

Who can apply

Only your Maltese employer can file the single-permit application. You cannot apply yourself. The application requires a signed employment contract, your passport, qualifications and other supporting documents.

Timeline

Single-permit processing typically takes 8–12 weeks. Skills Pass adds another 2–4 weeks of prep + assessment. The VFS D-visa appointment then takes a further 2–4 weeks.

Renewals

Single permits are issued for the length of your employment contract (commonly 1 year) and can be renewed. Long-term residence becomes possible after 5 years.
