Malta jobs - a complete guide for foreign workers

Malta has one of Europe's most accessible work-visa routes for non-EU workers. Here's how the legal route works, which sectors hire most, and how to avoid the scams.

Top sectors hiring foreign workers in Malta

Malta's labour market is dominated by tourism and services. The most common openings for South Asian and Gulf-based candidates are in:

  • Hospitality - chefs, waiters, room attendants, F&B staff
  • Care - caregivers, care assistants
  • Construction - masons, steel fixers, plumbers, electricians, helpers
  • Cleaning - hotel housekeeping, contract cleaning
  • Factory & production - pharma, food processing, electronics
  • Logistics & delivery

How the single permit works

Malta uses a single-permit system: one application covers your work permit and residence permit. Your employer files the application with Identità (formerly Identity Malta). You can't file it yourself.

Where Skills Pass fits in

For covered sectors (hospitality, care, etc.), the Skills Pass Pre-Departure assessment is mandatory before the single permit is issued. You can't skip it.

How to apply for a Malta job

Apply through licensed recruitment agencies in your country, or directly to Maltese employers via their careers pages and LinkedIn. Verify the Maltese employer is licensed by Identità before signing anything.

Avoiding Malta job scams

If anyone asks for lakhs of rupees, takas or riyals as a 'visa guarantee fee', it's a scam. The official single-permit fee is set by Identità (currently around €280) and is paid by the employer. The D-visa fee at VFS is around €100. Anything else above that for 'processing' is suspicious.
